Sun-damaging UV lights can take a toll on your skin. They not only cause premature aging but can also put you at an increased risk of developing skin cancer. Even if you diligently wear sunscreen and shielding clothing when at the beach or gardening, exposure to the sunlight still damages your skin. You might start to notice rough areas, dark spots, or wrinkles. A photofacial can improve sun-damaged skin and help to rejuvenate your appearance.

Dr. Sarah Donahue, co-owner and medical director of Instinct Holistic Medical Spa in Bozeman, MT can carry out a skin healing photofacial, which consists of a combination of Alma DyeVL pulsed dye laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments. The treatment will help rejuvenate skin and ease hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage. The noninvasive procedure provides impressive results.

Who is best suited for a photofacial?

The ideal candidate for a photofacial can have a combination of skin problems such as spots, redness, sun damage, large pores, freckles, rough texture, spider veins, melasma, and rosacea. Each of these conditions responds well to a photofacial, and patients experience noticeable results following treatment.

How is a photofacial performed?

Dr. Donahue and her team at Instinct Holistic Medical Spa in Bozeman, MT, use laser treatments to deliver pulses of light energy directly to the skin’s cells. The energy spurs rejuvenation by encouraging the skin to increase collagen production. As you age, your skin naturally slows its production of collagen. However, damaging UV light can also deplete the body further of collagen, which accelerates the aging process. Your skin will start to show a reduction in dark spots and a more even tone following the photofacial.

Using the combination of IPL and the Alma DyeVL (pulsed dye laser), the photofacial is performed in the office of Instinct Holistic Medical Spa in Bozeman, MT. The procedure takes about 20 – 30 minutes to perform. Many patients opt to undergo the treatment during their lunch hour or after work.

Prior to undergoing the photofacial, one of our technicians will wash and dry your skin. They will then place special shields over your eyes for protection. The laser treatment is delivered with a handheld device that is gently passed over the surface of your skin. It emits pulses of light energy that penetrate into the skin’s layers.

Patients often report mild discomfort during a photofacial. However, the entire treatment is usually well tolerated, and the duration of the discomfort is noticeably short.

Luckily, there is no downtime following a photofacial. Your skin might appear slightly pink, and there could be minor swelling, but usually nothing more dramatic. Typically, your skin returns to its normal tone by the end of the day. You can even apply makeup to hide the redness if you are returning to work.

The team at Instinct Holistic Medical Spa will direct you to apply a thin layer of ointment on the treated skin to help speed healing and minimize irritation. You can also take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory to ease swelling.

In 2 – 5 days, blemishes can develop on the surface of your skin but will quickly start to flake away.

During the healing process, wear sunscreen and avoid going out in direct sunlight. Also, never pick at the flaking skin.

Normally, it takes from 3 -– 6 sessions over the course of a month to start to notice skin improvement.
